This will be my last Blog for a little while, as I am in hospital shortly for an operation. There will be an update as soon as I am able.
I only have 2 or 3 results from Opens for Billingham members. Myself, Dave McNeill, Dennis Wright and Jimmy Dilworth won the Durham City Seniors Texas Scramble. Dennis Wright won the Durham County Members Autumn Salver with 45 points. This was played at Billingham. Gary Parker and Neil Hartley came 2nd at Whickham in a 4BBB Open with 46 points. Gary Parker won a Seniors Open at Linden Hall with 39 points. The Seniors Team finally ended in 3rd position in the 1st Division which was won by Eaglescliffe. The Inters won at Bedale in their latest match beating the 7 others in their league. There is one match to play at Oakleaf where they need to beat Roseberry Grange by more than 3 points to secure overall 2nd place which will take them to the finals at Ramside. The Rabbits were 2nd in their latest match at Parklands taking them into 3rd place in their league. A very good performance in their last match at Stocksfield may see them also at Ramside on finals day. The Golfer of the Year Competition is ‘hotting up’ in the Mens Section with 3 players within 4 points of the leading position and others very close. It will all come down to the Knockouts and 3 Final results, i.e. Stableford, Medal and Rosebowl. Good Luck to all.
Please support our Autumn/Winter Open on Tuesday 22nd October 2019, 3 Player Texas Scramble – £5 for members, £10 for non members.

The Seniors team is in first place 2 points ahead of Eaglescliffe having played 1 game more. They won at Teesside 12-2. We have 3 away games left one of which is at Eaglescliffe. The Inters came in 6th position recently at Dinsdale and are 4th in their group league currently with 19 points behind Crook who have 27 points. The latest match at Stocksfield on Sunday, our Team won ahead of leaders Crook and Roseberry Grange. The latest league table shows us in 4th position with 27 points, Crook leading with 33, Roseberry Grange – 31 and Dinsdale – 28. The top 2 teams qualify for the final at Ramside therefore everything to play for. The Union team is in 2nd position behind Cleveland after their latest win at Catterick 15-9. The draw for the club championship will be done this weekend. The Rabbits were at Billingham last Sunday, the team secured 1st place with a man short, and previously they were 2nd at Boldon, but 7th at South Moor. The team are now lying 4th in the table with 2 games to go. As with the Inters, the top 2 teams go to the final at Ramside. The Union Team in the 2nd Division had a good win at Catterick last week 15-9 and against Cleveland yesterday at home, they won 16-8 to make them 4 points clear at the top of the table above Cleveland, with 2 matches to go, 2 team to go up to Division 1, so here’s hoping. Following the championship we have the men’s open, a charity day, Rosebowl Q5 and Medal Q6.
Some notable performances in Opens by Billingham members recently were as follows: Ravensworth Patron’s Day 4BBB – Eric Garbutt & John Szyman won with 47 points. Neil Hartley, Jimmy Ayre, Gary Parker & Tim Thornhill, playing in pairs, won the Seniors Open 4BBB competition at Houghton le Spring with 63 points. The best individual score from each pair at each hole was added together to achieve their overall score. Teesside Union Junior Patrons Day last Monday at Teesside – in 2nd place were Keith & Lee James with 46 points (48 points won), Dave McNeill & Dennis Wright in 3rd place with 44 points (BB9). In the 4 man team competition at Eaglescliffe on Sunday, best 2 from 4, a team of Paul & Max Hewitson, Roy Maplebeck & Sean Bennetts came 3rd with 90 points, the winners totalling a mind blowing 100 points !!
We are still struggling with slow play, particularly on the Tuesday Stableford competitions. This should not be happening with our Pace of Play Policy, available to all our competitors and the new rule of 3 minutes to find a lost ball, particularly at night time. Some pairings are losing up to 3 holes and taking 45 minutes longer for 18 holes than other pairings. I urge you to let faster 3 balls through, this being good golf etiquette. As a Committee we are determined to stamp out slow play and may even resort to naming and shaming.
I would also like to mention that many golfers are taking electric trolleys and buggies between greens and bunkers and would therefore request that they are taken around bunkers thus avoiding damaging areas in and around the greens. As always, please repair pitch marks and replace divots.
We are now in possession of the 50 Year Anniversary Board and hope to have it erected in the Clubhouse shortly. The Derek Olley Invitation list is up in the Foyer, and as this is a major Club Competition, please enter and make this a successful occasion. We have 3 open competitions on the BRS: Men’s Open – Saturday 27th July 2019 – £20 per pair, Seniors Open – Friday 9th August 2019, 4BBB Open Competition – Tuesday 27th August 2019.
All these competitions, if over supported, will have good prize money available. The lists for the President’s Cup and Festival Trophy are on the Competitions Board. The Club Championship is being played this weekend and I wish all participants good luck and may the best golfer win. I have posted the current golfer of the year on the competitions board which shows Brian Morgan with an 8 point lead over Tom Lee and 12 points ahead of Mike Butterfield.

The Union Team have played matches and are in 2nd position in the 2nd Division behind Cleveland. The latest result versus Dinsdale away resulted in a 12-12 draw.
Seniors Team are leading the 1st Division by 9 points from Eaglescliffe having played 1 game more. Our team have a free week next week. However, our team have played 5 home matches and only 1 away match.
The Inters situation has not changed since my last blog as their League match at Stocksfield was called off. Their next game is at Oakleaf on Sunday 16.6.19.
The Rabbits have completed 2 League matches at Seaham, 2nd out of 7 and Dinsdale last out of 7 overall to date we are bottom. However, the team under the guidance of Captain Tony Jones are confident of improved results. Their next match is at Boldon Saturday 15.6.19.
The 5 man Union Team were beaten in the Clark Cup at home by Castle Eden who had competitors with +4, +3 and scratch handicaps so were up against it.
Steve Cartwright and Eric Martin have progressed to 5th round Daily Mail Foursomes winning at Cleveland 5 and 4. Three pairings I know of have progressed to Last 16 of Teesside Union Summer 4BBB KO. Eric Garbutt & Peter Jamieson, Terry Conlon & Dennis Wright, Neil Kerr & myself, not sure of our other 3 pairings.
Our 2 pairings of Simon & Carol Jones, Dave & Cath McNeill failed to qualify in the Durham County Mixed Team Championship held at Washington. Brad Hildreth, Lloyd Bond and Simon Jones were all unlucky in the Teesside Union Inter Club 3 Man Team Championship at Saltburn.
The Committee have had problems recently with 1 competitor entering their playing partners cards. One one occasion in the last Rosebowl, 6 addition 2’s were recorded. Ken Walters spent valuable time rechecking and amending this problem. I would appreciate you all to enter your own cards, it only takes a few minutes, even if you have to rush off after your round, to avoid this situation happening again. Also, when you No Return your card, it MUST be entered in the computer. This applies to non completion due to injury or bad weather. Your cards must also be returned in the Box by the computer. You will see mention of the above on Page 4 of the Club Membership Book/Diary.
I have posted on both Noticeboards a reply to my email sent to England Golf regarding Away Cards, especially Pairs Competitions. These must be returned to Billingham, good or bad, and may be used for handicap purposes, especially if certain pairings have 2, 3 or 4 good results winning prize money. You will see from Danny Finlay’s reply, handicaps can be suspended. He states it is the Player’s responsibility to take a copy or photograph of their card for return to the Home Club. Please read these emails and take notice of their content.
The Player of the Year lists for Gents and Ladies have been posted on the appropriate Noticeboards. The early leaders are Brian Morgan, after his win in the Bill Allen, and Helen Fawcett.
A couple of pieces of etiquette and golf rulings not being observed by some competitiors recently. Once you have reached the vicinity of where you think your ball has finished you only have 3 Minutes. Your responsibility is your own ball not your playing partners. If you have lost ground on the match in front, let the game behind through as you are probably holding them up. If you are playing a S V Hunter and you are being followed by a Foursomes or Singles game let the faster format through. If you are a 4 ball, let a 3 ball through. If you are a 3 ball let a 2 ball through if at all possible.
You will see local rule additions and competition date changes on the Noticeboards. You will note the latest Scorecards include the new rules of golf numbers to the local rules on the reverse of the card. Out of bounds, or think maybe out of bounds, must play a provisional ball. If this 1st ball is lost or out of bounds, 2 shot penalty in ALL competitions. You are not allowed in competition golf to drop a ball at the point you may think or agree where your ball went out of bounds. However, you may adopt this in your own friendly group situation.
The Derek Olley Invitation has been re-arranged and will be played on Saturday 14th September 2019. Rather than putting on BRS, we will be putting a list on the Comps Noticeboards, to append your names and preferred time. The cost has been reduced to £15.00.
Also, the Seniors Open has been re-arranged to Friday 9th August 2019 and will be put on BRS.
Just a reminder that all Teesside Union and Durham County Competitions are on the Noticeboards adjacent to Julie’s Office.
Hope the weather improves. See you after my holidays in early July.
